Hopeless and self-destructive

One of the most tragic plots in the Kalevala epos is the story of Kullervo. Kullervo possessed fantastic strength and magical abilities. He was born and grew up captive. The hero doesn’t know his destiny, the only thing he can do is destroying. He causes sorrow both to himself and to everyone around him, and in the end Kullervo thrusts the point of the sword given to him by God Ukko into his chest.
The story teaches us that evil can only give rise to evil. Perhaps this story had a special influence on the national identity of the Finnish people distinguished with their love for freedom, independence, and peace. The print depicts the image of the handsome but unhappy Kullervo who is going to take revenge on the old witch Louhi’s daughter.
